Our PHSE Curriculum
Aim
At Front Street Primary School we believe PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing and tackles many issues that are part of growing up.
PSHE is at the heart of our school ethos. We are dedicated to ensuring that ‘Everyone has the right to learn, to be safe and to be treated with respect’ and ‘are committed to the health and wellbeing of our children and staff’.

Front Street is a UNICEF Rights Respecting school, achieving the Gold school award. We ensure that children gain an understanding of both their rights and responsibilities as a child. We help to develop children’s acceptance of difference and diversity and provide them with a strong moral compass.
The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of schools in the UK.
The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
There are four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school; wellbeing, participation, relationships and self-esteem.
The difference that a Rights Respecting School makes goes beyond the school gates, making a positive impact on the whole community.
- Children are healthier and happier
- Children feel safe
- Children have better relationships
- Children become active and involved in school life and the wider world

Intent
Through our PSHE curriculum, our pupils will develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally. They will learn to value themselves and others whilst acknowledging and appreciating difference and diversity. Pupils will develop their emotions, self-confidence and self-responsibility whilst learning to make informed choices and preparing them to be positive and active members of the school, local community and society.
So how does this look:
Ambitious
Children are given the tools to develop their confidence and believe that they can be anything they want to be. They set goals and achieve them. Children are well equipped for the challenges of the modern world.
Progressive
There are 6 units of work that children will cover each year. Each lesson is built on year on year so progression in each unit is clearly evident. Children make progress in PSHE from their starting point.
Independent
Children can work with independence within PSHE, their confidence and skills are developed throughout lessons. This enables them to tackle any activities set/situations without relying on others.
Inclusive
We believe, achieve and succeed in PSHE. We have high aspirations for all and everyone’s input is valued and listened to. Children complete a unit of work ‘Celebrating difference’ which has inclusivity at its core, however all teaching and learning is inclusive.
Relevant
Our PSHE curriculum teaches children a vast array of skills to equip them in their daily lives. It provides children with opportunities to develop their emotional intelligence and life skills. PSHE is meaningful and purposeful to our children.
Resilience
Children are taught about resilience within the ‘Dreams and Goals’ unit of the Jigsaw programme. This unit teaches children about being resilient and gives them the tools to be able to apply resilience throughout their learning. Our children have a growth mindset in PSHE and they believe in their ability.
Ready
The PSHE curriculum nurtures children to be confident and happy, increasing their capacity to learn. It is broken down into age appropriate units and lessons. Children are ready to develop their skills within the units each year, building on the work from the previous year.
Implementation
Here at Front Street we have adopted the Jigsaw scheme of work which aims to develop the ‘whole child’ through a spiral curriculum. We implement the Jigsaw approach from Nursery to Year Six and teachers adapt the scheme in order to reflect the needs of their pupils. PSHE is taught through Jigsaw’s six half termly units with each year group studying the same unit at the same time to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding in:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
Learning in each topic then takes place during weekly whole class Jigsaw lessons which explore the different themes. Progression in skills and knowledge in PSHE are outlined in the curriculum overview. (PSHE curriculum overview).
We believe that PSHE education plays a vital part in primary education so as well as discrete lessons, it is embedded throughout the curriculum. Key concepts are explored across our broad and balanced curriculum. PSHE is also an important part of school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. In addition we hold special events such as themed days/weeks, we invite in visitors and have regular links with our community.
Our PSHE delivery ensures the children explore the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. It helps pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings. Children at Front Street also acquire an understanding of British values that are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect others, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as a British and global citizen.
Jigsaw is explicitly linked to the Ofsted Framework and incorporates Government agenda on British Values and SMSC. It links to the school Safeguarding, RSE, Equality and Healthy School/Healthy Eating policies.
Teaching of PHSE
In Early Years:
PSHE in the early years is taught mainly through daily routines and continuous provision. As a school we follow the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme and have links with NSPCC charity. This is incorporated into the EY curriculum through teaching, learning and enhanced opportunities. The role of the adult is to support children in making the correct decisions through discussions and leading by example. Staff will follow the school behaviour policy reminding children of the expectations and staff being consistent in their approaches. Carpet times will be used to build relationships between children and staff and enable children to develop their confidence and social skills. Plan do review sessions give children the opportunities to plan their own activities and learning and how to review their successes.
Staff use the six steps of conflict resolution to support children in learning how to deal with issues between friends, the Colour Monster story helps children to begin to understand feelings and to discuss how situations make us feel.
In KS1 and KS2:
We value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning. Teachers deliver the weekly lessons in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way. There is a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, and Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus. These lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways, for example, assemblies, Learning Charters, praise and reward systems and we aim to ‘live’ what is learnt and apply it to everyday situations in the school community.
We include the statutory Relationships and Health Education within our whole-school PSHE Programme and further information can be found on our separate RSE page.
PHSE – Impact
At Front Street we strive to enhance our children’s education, enabling our children to become positive, confident individuals who are equipped and ready to encounter 21st century life, knowing how to keep themselves healthy and safe, treat others with tolerance and understanding and maintain positive relationships within the diverse world we live in.
PHSE – Inclusion and Equal Opportunities
PSHE and RSE education plays an important role for learners with SEND. Pupils are given the opportunities to rehearse and embed practical skills and understanding they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives and enjoy safe and healthy relationships.
At Front Street, we believe that all children should be fully included in all aspects of learning; therefore, we teach PSHE and RSE to all children whatever their ability. PSHE lessons at Front Street provide an inclusive environment where learners have the opportunity to explore and reflect upon issues that affect them and can develop strategies and skills to manage real-life situations. PSHE and RSE lessons are delivered in a way to meet the needs of all children, using a combination of teaching methods to ensure that all children are able to access learning and are engaged in the topic. All children will be supported to access age appropriate content in PSHE AND RSE through support within the class, teaching strategies and resources such as visuals and symbols. We adapt the curriculum content and resource appropriately, to enable all children to make progress in PSHE and RSE. Teachers take children’s EHCP’s and Learning Plans into consideration when planning PSHE and RSE lessons and make any adaptations they feel necessary to ensure that all children achieve. We work in compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014 to ensure our curriculum is accessible for pupils with SEND.
If you have any further questions, related to PSHE or RSE, here at Front Street, please contact the school office who will be happy to help.
