Year 6 Crank Up their DT skills.

Year Six were off to Beamish today to take part in this year’s Crank It Up Challenge.  We had to make a crane which could lift and lower a weight, move along a track and our designs also needed to include a rotating jib (arm).

We had a visit from Martin ,an engineer who works all across the globe designing, building and repairing deep sea machines and vehicles.

During our designing and building work, we had to apply all of our DT skills and processes.  We researched different ideas for building stable structures and created prototypes and then evaluated and refined our designs.  After lots of amazing teamwork and sharing of ideas we were finally ready to take our finished cranes and design boards to be judged by a professional engineer at Beamish.

Take a look at our final crane structures – they really are incredible!

Both of our final entries managed to lift 1.1kg which was amazing considering they only needed to lift 30g. Brilliant engineering from two very talented teams!
