On this page, you can find information about our MFL curriculum (for French)  at Front Street Primary School.

Subject Aim:

Children at Front Street Primary School are taught to develop an interest in learning another language in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating.  We strive to engage a curiosity about language (French) and an awareness of cultural differences in other countries whilst encouraging confidence, independence and creative skills.  The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed to enable the children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning. French lessons are progressive and ambitious and are focused on, key skills, phonics, grammar and vocabulary. The children are challenged in their learning and are taught to think critically whilst having their curiosity stimulated. Children leave Front Street with a love of French and a belief that they can achieve and succeed in French.

Our whole-school curriculum drivers that we promote across all subjects are: ready, relevant, progressive, ambitious, independent, inclusive, resilient.

So…how does this look in French?

Ambitious

MFL is the development of children’s linguistic competence and should be seen as a lifelong skill. Learning a language opens up avenues of communication and exploration as well as promoting, encouraging and instilling a broader cultural understanding and a broader understanding of the world through looking at French history and culture today.

Progressive

We use the Rachel Hawkes scheme to ensure progression and repetition so that skills and knowledge are built on and developed. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics.

Independent

In MFL children work in a range of contexts and use a range of resources but they have the confidence to develop the ability to complete tasks independently through a modelled and scaffolded approach ( I do, we do, you do)

Inclusive

The teaching of MFL gives every child a chance to take part and enjoy a new language. Our aim is that all children can and will succeed in French. Our curriculum is fully inclusive and supports ranging needs and cultural diversity.

Relevant

Children are taught to develop an interest in learning another language in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating and will provide them with skills that they can use in life. In addition, we strive to engage a curiosity and an awareness of cultural knowledge in another country.

Resilience

Our children have a growth mindset in French; they believe that they can and will succeed. They understand that French will be difficult at times but they have the mindset to persevere. Children leave Front Street with a love of French and a belief that they can achieve and succeed in French.

Ready

In MFL, children are taught age related expectations which are linked to our scheme of choice. Each year masters their own year group’s content before moving on to the next year group’s.

How is our curriculum in French organised and delivered?

Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children skills in languages, through regular taught lessons in Key Stage 2. Lessons are grouped into topics which focus on basic skills, phonics and grammar in addition to the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around these topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, role play, watching French speakers via videos, singing activities and games. We use the Rachel Hawkes scheme to ensure progression and repetition so that skills and knowledge are built on and developed. Reading skills are developed through the use of French fiction and non-fiction books and written extracts related to the specific topics. Children are encouraged to develop their written skills and grammar through a variety of written activities.

Inclusion and Equal Opportunities

The teaching of MFL gives every child a chance to take part and enjoy a new language. All children can and will succeed in French. Where necessary, small tweaks are made to the delivery of lessons to enable the success of all learners. Starting a new language in KS2 is a great leveller and SEND pupils often find this a big confidence boost especially those children who have difficulties in other areas of the curriculum. Our MFL curriculum is inclusive; we have high aspirations for all, including children with SEND Tasks are differentiated to meet the needs of all pupils and extra support, or extension, given when necessary. All children have the opportunities to succeed in MFL. We work in compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014 to ensure our curriculum is accessible for pupils with SEND.
