As well as testing our amazing Crank It Up cranes, Beamish also organised some other brilliant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) challenges for our Year 6 children to complete during their visit.
In the morning, in the 1950’s area, we learned a little bit about the space race between the USA and USSR and then we became 1950’s rocket designers. Our rockets were air-powered so they didn’t quite make it into orbit but thanks to our aerodynamic designs and adaptations they flew really well!
In the afternoon we learned the history of ice-cream (or gelato) and then we made our own – but we did it without an ice-cream maker or a freezer. ‘How is that possible?’ you may be asking. We added salt to ice-cubes to lower their freezing point to create our very own freezer, and our ice-cream ingredients were churned by hand until they froze. Educational and delicious -especially on a hot day!
After an tour of the 1950s houses – where we saw a huge TV with a tiny screen, a washing machine that was loaded from above and a pantry instead of a fridge – we headed over to the field beside the fairground for a bit of free time… grass rolling, football and shade bathing!
