Year Six spent time at the Nissan plant learning about how designers and manufacturers are developing technology to better care for the environment and our futures. Before the visit, the children were set two challenges. Firstly, to design a new paint exterior for the Nissan Leaf – their fully electric car. Secondly, they had to construct a wind turbine from recycled materials making sure the turbine blades would catch the wind and designing an axle that would reduce friction.
During the visit the children learned about different sources of renewable energy and carried out tonnes of exciting experiments such as discovering how combustion engines produced emissions which contain carbon and how the melting of the ice caps is causing sea level rises.
Our children were so brilliant that after we returned to school, Year 6 were contacted by the educational director for Nissan to say how amazing both classes of Year 6 children had been. The Eco-Schools course had been revamped and our children were the first groups to take part since these changes happened. Nissan staff delivering the sessions were so impressed by our behaviour, knowledge and teamwork skills that they have asked if we could provide Nissan with some feedback and photographs of what we did, to be used in their Skills Foundation Booklet for other schools.
